After being made redundant in my last job, having income protection really saved me. I want to make sure I have it again for my next job.
firstly, most new policies will require approx 6 months steady work in the same job before you are eligible to apply for a policy which might be either a mortgage payment protection plan or accident/sickness/redundancy plan.
these are generally designed to cover short term periods but there are income protection plans which can cover right up to retirement age for health related claims.
insurers will consider the type of job you do (and the implied risk of the occupation) as well as the location. there are companies that will cover overseas work but they will be specialist and therefore a lot more work is involved in providing specific terms.
