What additional services do we get with a PMI plan for pregnancy?
Too late this time since my wife is already pregnant, but could in the future since we plan on having 2 more.
Generally international private medical insurance (PMI) will cover pregnancy as a standard cover item, however UK mainstream PMI will exclude anything to do with a normal pregnancy.
It is possible to be covered though, and most providers will offer an element of cover on their more expensive options.
Certainly it will tend to only be available on the higher end policies, and won't be something you'll get on a 'budget' policy.
John is completely right, UK-based health insurance plans usually exclude normal pregnancy. Some plans would however cover complications at child-birth if the policy was taken out 10 months before the birth.
And for the same kind of reasons, private health insurance will tend not to cover accident and emergency issues as there are already people trained in those specialities and private hospitals simply do not have the capacity to offer those services without massively increasing premiums.
However, many NHS hospitals will now offer private room facilities on a cost per night basis so if the reason for asking was driven by wanting privacy, personal space and better visiting hours etc, you should ask your intended facility if they offer such a service
