According to the critics 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' is one of the most disappointing movies ever. Mass marketing and hyperbole hasn't done much to save a film which has received 240 negative reviews, condemning it as 'Rotten' on Rotten Tomatoes. It may be painful for anyone 'creatively' involved (with a particularly funny 'Sad Affleck' meme doing the rounds) but it's to be of little significance to the studio, Warner Bros., as the film edges towards a total worldwide gross of $900m.
To put it in context, another fairly recent, (but well received release); 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' has grossed $2bn and sits at number 3 on the worldwide list. Both films production budget was around $250m, so even 'flops' can be big business in Hollywood.
'Batman v Superman' is a question every comic geek has posed at some point in time, so the bringing together of these two alone would guarantee a big box office take on the opening weekend. Taking $166m in the US and $256 worldwide during the opening weekend, Dawn of Justice currently sits 11 th highest grossing in the list of 'superhero' movies, and 43 th in the all-time 'US' list.
Interestingly though, with the figures adjusted for inflation Batman v Superman only ranks 189 th on the US list, with 'Gone With the Wind' still topping the charts, which would take a massive $1.7bn in the US alone if it were released with today's rates.
Despite ticket sales tailing off over recent weeks, Dawn of Justice has served a purpose with little damage being sustained by either the Batman or Superman franchise, and it seems we could be subjected to a few more superhero movies yet.
