Many fans of the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' books feel that the HBO show has taken some fairly big liberties with its adaptation. Reddit comments are aplenty, with people crying out for 'Lady Stoneheart' and other interesting peripheral characters which appear to appear to have been dropped from the adaptation, but nothing has been as criminal as the shows handling of the 'Dorne' storyline.
The adaptation's take
on the storyline reduces interesting developments in the land of
Westeros down to base sex and violence; in an approving way - which
is somewhat contrary to the source material. Instead of a handful of
interesting characters and solid plot development, we're dealt
two-dimensional, unscrupulous (– but sexy mind), murderesses, and a
story which makes no sense in it's current state.
To remedy this, a bunch
of Game of Thrones nerds have launched a Kickstarter campaign called
'Fixing Dorne'. The project is being led by writer/actor David
Panfilo (who wrote some of the questions for the official Game of
Thrones trivia board game), Sean Ireland (a producer, 1st AD, writer,
actor, and director), Vincent Pezzutti, and artist/writers Teela
Wyman and Jonathan Ying (Ying was even the lead designer for that
official Game of Thrones trivia board game), and is aiming to create
fully written/edited/acted 'patch' which will expand the story
properly, and give us more fleshed-out characters.
The team are seeking
$20m to create the scenes to the same standard as the HBO series,
which costs between $6m - $10m per episode, and promise "our
Sand Snakes are introduced in a style closer to George RR Martin’s
- as diverse as their mothers, and written as more than just catty
comic relief " They make other sensible suggestions of course,
such as 'perhaps that big bad Areo Hotah guy, will get to use his axe
at least once'.
Anyone willing to
pledge $1 to the cause receive “cosmic assurance that they have
taken the right side of history in the struggle against impractical
whips and male-written cattiness." But more interestingly, if
the team reach $21.5 million dollars, they have stated that they will
try to hire Jerome Flynn to reprise his role as 'Bronn', along with
Robson Green, to record a version of 'The Dornishman's Wife'. Surely
that's something we could all do without?
