Before going ahead do be sure that you need to do so, because after all you will be increasing your long-term debt. Next work out how much you need as clearly as you can, without being tempted to take more than you actually need. Once you have made your carefully considered decisions, your first step must be to approach your existing lender to see what they can do for you in the form of a remortgage or a 'further advance'. They are often the best people for you, because they will charge a low fee and there will be no legal or valuation costs. Finally, armed with their quote (or without their quote if they are unable to do so!) approach an independent adviser, show them the quote and ask if they can improve on it. When you have found the best deal check that the payments are realistic and sensible for you. Hope this helps. | 12.10.10 @ 00:49
