I am 28 and I have no life cover. I have a wife and a child. What type should I go for?

This will depend on your priorities, however, as a minimum, if you have a mortgage then you should sufficient life cover to pay this off if either or your wife die. On top of this you should consider providing an income to enable your wife and child to enjoy their standard of living if you were to die. I would also recommend considering income protection or critical illness cover in case you are unable to work.
