I know very little about stocks and shares but I am interested in investing. How do I start?

I would strongly recommend you read the book "The Elements of Investing" by Charles Ellis and Burton Malkiel. Theses are the best basic rules of investing by two fo the world's greatest financial thinkers. All it takes is a couple of hours. If you wish to take it further, look up their other books.

One other book that may also be of interest is, "The Investors Manifesto" by william Bernstein.

Once you have read these it will definitlely equip you for long-term investing.
