Most single trip travel insurance policies will cover you for being abroad for up to 30 days at a time. However, with the rise in career people taking time out from their day jobs to travel, work and volunteer abroad, not to mention the number of young people travelling for extended periods before or after university or before entering the job market, the demand for extended trip travel insurance is as high as ever. Extended trip travel insurance will cover you for trips of 3 months and more, meaning that you can get on with enjoying your trip without having to worry about whether you and your possessions are covered.
Extended trip travel insurance will usually cover your for medical expenses of up to £1m (although if you are an EU resident and you are travelling in the EU you should also carry a (free) EHIC card which will entitle you to free or subsidised state medical care should you become ill), cutting short or cancelling your trip and losing or damaging your belongings. Make sure that the insurer that you use has a helpline that is easily accessible from abroad (preferably open 24 hours), and that you are aware of any time restrictions for making a claim. Also, some insurance policies will ask for police reports if you are reporting stolen items. Ask as many questions of the insurer as you need in order to put your mind at rest about your travel insurance, and always, always read the small print carefully before taking out a policy.
